Increased drought, reduced snowpack, and widespread wildfires are fundamentally changing the landscape of outdoor recreation as we know it.

Temperatures are soaring in the Southwest this week 鈥撯�� with highs reaching close to historical records here in New Mexico. The heat has researchers worried about birds and their health as climate change diminishes food and water supplies for native and migratory species.

Up until now New Mexicans have been enjoying a mostly 鈥渃ool鈥� summer. The scorching heat came out of the blue for most, but is definitely more typical of this time of year and it has many looking for relief.

On the heels of extreme weather events, like New Mexico鈥檚 devastating 2022 fire season, lawmakers are aiming to establish a public health program and climate resiliency fund to address health related issues in rural communities. This week, that bill has cleared its first hurdle in the Roundhouse.
