Northern New Mexico’s Rio Gallinas is now among one of the most endangered rivers in the U.S. The river faces numerous threats: drought, reduced snowpack, and the fallout from the Calf Canyon/Hermit’s Peak Fire.

The proposed funding is included in a draft omnibus spending bill that Congress could pass this week. The appropriation would be incorporated into the legislation passed earlier this year that promised to compensate victims of the Calf Canyon/Hermits Peak fire for everything they lost.

The focus of the seeding is the Gallinas river watershed, which provides the great majority of the water for Las Vegas and has been badly affected by the fire. Burned trees and ash have poured into the river during monsoon rains.

Having now scorched over 487 square miles, the Calf Canyon/Hermits Peak fire is the largest wildfire in state history. It’s a combination of two blazes, one of which was started as a prescribed burn by the U.S. Forest Service. Las Vegas Optic editor Phil Sharer, who’s been on the ground in northeastern New Mexico since the fire sparked last month, spoke with ¾ÅÉ«Íø’s Yasmin about what he’s seen and heard, and who’s shown up to pitch in.

Projected to double in size in the coming days, the Calf Canyon/ Hermit’s Peak Fire continued to rage in northern New Mexico––threatening towns and villages and forcing thousands to flee. Now, erratic winds are pushing the flames closer to Mora and Las Vegas.
